Year 5 Iveson Blog

  This week we have being focusing on out STEM project. Here we are investigating how to use an elastic band to power a car. This included looking at the impact of weight and surface texture.

This week, we welcomed Ralph Thoresby to Iveson to deliver their team building workshop.  We all had a fantastic time!                                          

This week, we have been writing our own music and playing it on the clarinets.   

This week we have been writing our own explanation text with add humour.   

We really enjoyed getting outside today and using our Georgraphical knowledge to find different locations using coordinates. We drew different images to mark the locations! 

This year one of our DT highlights so far  has been baking bread!

In computing we explored variable coding using 'if' and 'then' functions to build our very own fairground ride prototypes. Our programming included a spinning motor (with an option to increase and decrease the speed) and multicoloured led lights (which flashed at diffent speeds depending upon the motor function). We've really enjoyed this topic and cand wait to code our own remote controlled cars next! 

 This half term, we have been using the 'if... then...' conditions to build and code our own fairground rides. Here is an example below:

 This week, we have been creating our own podcasts relating to Howard Carter using our biographies as inspiration. Take a listen and see what you think... 

 This week, we have been using maps to complete an orienteering course. 

Get involved with some Number Day themed baking ahead of Friday's NSPCC Number Day!

 This half term, we have started learning the clarinet. We are going to be refining our skills now until summer and into Year 6.  

 Today, we have been exploring the use of micro:bits to code our own disco dance. We coded the micro:bit to start and stop the motor as well as adding light patterns with LED strips.

In English, we've been exploring noun phrases, but did you know that in the English language there is a specific order to the adjectives that you use? For example... You can't have : A green, big dragon But you can have: A big, green dragon Try it out yourself with some different adjectives, which sounds correct?

  This week, we have been investigating levers, pulleys and gears. Here were have created our own wind powered pulley system. 

  This week, we have used the lino prints, that we carved, to create a printed design. Next, we are going to add our print designs onto a tote bag! 

 In Computing, we have been learnign about different filming techniques. We have explored the following shots close up, mid shot, long shot, moving, side by side, high, low or normal. 

This week, we attended the Climate Change Conference at Leed University. We took part in worshops, talks and discussions about climate change. Before designing what a sustainable future could look like for us as we get older.
